The Mumbai Crime branch obtained the transit remand on Friday from the Rampur court to take Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant Fahim Ansari — an accused in the CRPF camp attack case — into custody for interrogation in connection with the Mumbai terror attacks. Additional Sessions Judge (II) Jaisheel Pathak accepted the warrant issued from the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Mumbai, against Fahim and ordered for his transit remand. Fahim, who was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police in February, had conducted a recce of several landmarks in Mumbai. Nine hand-drawn maps were also seized from him.Senior Superintendent of Police of UP, ATS, Rajiv Sabbarwal said: “The court has not specified the period for the transit remand within which the police would have to produce Fahim before the designated court in Mumbai. Instead, the court has asked the police to make it as soon as possible.” The court rejected the application of the Mumbai police seeking remand of another LeT member Sabahuddin, who is accused in the same case. The police have been asked to file the application before the appropriate court which had remanded him in judicial custody. Currently, Sabahuddin is in Lucknow jail. The police is expected to file an application for his transit remand on Saturday before the Lucknow court, said a state ATS officer, who is helping the Mumbai police team in legal formalities.Despite court order for Fahim’s transit remand, the Mumbai team did not take his custody from the Bareilly jail till late on Friday. The ATS officer said the Mumbai police team would take Fahim out of the jail soon after procuring the court order for Sabahuddin.
