Hike in loose tea prices

The Mumbai Tea Dealersquot; Association has increased the price of loose tea by Rs 10 per kilogram owing to escalating prices at auction centres due to huge exports, dearth in supply, and heavy tax burden on tea dealers. While the prices of well-known brands like Brookebond, Lipton and Tata already went up by Rs 30 recently, loose tea in Mumbai will now cost in the range of Rs 130 to Rs 140, depending on the quality. Said MTDA secretary Harendra Shah in a press release, tea production in India was to the tune of 81 crore, and domestic tea consumption during the current year was estimated at 63.50 crore kgs. However, exports increased from 15.40 crore kgs last year to more than 20 crore kgs, leading to a shortage of CTC leaves and dust tea for the local market, he said. Loose tea in Mumbai is available up to Rs 170 per kg, which is now unaffordable for traders, said the release.
