Morcha by mill workers

The Girni Kamgar Sangarsh Samiti has organised a morcha to Mantralaya on July 21 to demand that the Matulya Mill be handed over to the workers. In a press note, the Samiti warned that if Chief Minister Narayan Rane does not pay heed to their problems, they will prevent him from entering his office. According to Datta Iswalkar of the Samiti, the workers had submitted a proposal to the state government whereby the mill would be run by them, but the government has turned its back on them.

Varsity marks Foundation Day

The University of Mumbai celebrated its 143rd Foundation Day today. A function was held at the newly constructed Marathi Bhasha and Sahitya Bhavan at the university’s Kalina campus on the occasion. Mohan Dharia, president, Vanarai, Pune, and Satish Tripathi, secretary, revenue and forest department, attended the function. Distinguished teachers and outstanding university departments were felicitated at the function. Altogether, 24 awards were given.Employees who had put in several years of service were also given awards. Six colleges were also recognised for their performance in NSS, NCC, sports and cultural activities.

Demonstration by teachers

The Mumbai Junior College Teachers’ Union (MJCTU) will hold a demonstration at Azad Maidan on Tuesday. The protest, to be held from 12 pm to 2 pm, is to protest the government’s “negative and uncooperative attitude”. The MJCTU is also protesting the government’s decision to implement a two-tier scale as opposed to the demanded three-tier scale. IE employee retires n SHRIDHAR Pednekar, who was employed with the Rotary Department of The Indian Express retired after putting 29 years of service with the organisation. He was given a warm farewell by his colleagues and was presented with a silver statue, a shawl and a coconut. Among those present at the function included Personnel Manager Sunil Jha and Works Manager B P Tipnis.
