Pegging Mumbai Income Tax Commissioner B R Meena’s assets at a whopping Rs 3.6 crore, the CBI today claimed that he was the biggest catch in their countrywide raids on September 30.

Agency officials said that Meena kept a low profile in Mumbai—he took a local bus to office everyday—but among his assets that were unearthed in Jaipur were a luxury car and a Rolex watch.

The initial disproportionate assets case against Meena, one of the four joint secretary-level officers targeted by CBI, was for Rs 43 lakh. Today, another Rs 20 lakh in cash and jewellery worth Rs 7.5 lakh tumbled out of Meena’s four bank lockers that were opened by agency sleuths in Jaipur and Sikar district in Rajasthan.

The cash receipt of a Rs 3-lakh Rolex watch and a Ford vehicle worth Rs 14 lakh was found at Meena’s palatial house in Jaipur’s Mahavir Nagar, said officials. This house is worth Rs 1 crore—Meena owns 18 plots of land here bought in the name of his children and wife, they added. ‘‘His liquid assets are worth Rs 1.61 crores alone…one bank locker is still to be opened,’’ CBI spokesperson G Mohanty told The Indian Express.

The 1977 batch IRS officer had served for quite a while as I-T Commissioner in Jaipur before moving to Mumbai (Appellate Tribunal), around 10 months ago. ‘‘In Mumbai, he tried his best to evade attention. Meena was considered a very upright officer in the I-T Colony on Peddar Road in Mumbai due to his simple lifestyle. He even chose to take a local bus to his Churchgate office everyday,’’ a senior CBI official said.

CBI officials say that various cases handled by Meena during his Jaipur stint are now under the scanner.
