NOVEMBER 14: Eight-times Wills Trophy champions Mumbai were off the blocks in style at the Wankhede Stadium this evening. The emphatic seven-wicket victory over Maharashtra in the West Zone One-day league match could well serve to be the platform which the hosts would be looking to base their future conquests.

Right from the moment Amol Muzumdar put the opposition in after winning the toss, Mumbai dominated the proceedings.

Manoj Joglekar’s stunning catch at point to dismiss Shantanu Sugwekar was an apt testimony to the high fielding standards set by Mumbai as its bowlers tightened the noose with a disciplined display. In the event, Maharashtra could only muster 182, mainly due to an 80-run association between Sugwekar (70: 103b, 125m, 5×4) and Indrajeet Kamtekar (37: 42b, 63m, 2×4, 1×6).

The 22-year-old medium-pacer Santosh Saxena justified his growing reputation as a promising prospect claiming three wickets while left-arm spinner Nilesh Kulkarni was rewarded with an equal number for his niggardlyline.

Though Maharashtra made some early inroads removing the openers, Jatin Paranjpe (68 not out: 99b, 147m, 4×4, 2×6) and Muzumdar (41: 78b, 89m, 5×4) snatched the initiative with an 83-run alliance. Southpaw Paranjpe led a merry life when Sugwekar dropped a sitter at long-off when the batsman was on 30 and later, when he was on 52, wicket-keeper Sanjay Kondhalkar reacted late off left-arm spinner Kamtekar for a reprieve.

Skipper Muzumdar regaled with two majestic cover-drives that bisected the six-member off-side field like a ray of light before a moment of indecisiveness ended his tenure.

Vinod Kambli, who walked in to a roaring applause, appeared in good touch during his cameo of 28 not out. Paranjpe’s straight six off Abhijit Kale which hoisted the victory target climaxed the Mumbai influence on the proceedings.
