A public interest writ petition, challenging provisions of Income Tax Act and rules framed thereunder for grant of approval by the Central government to Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) of a company without hearing workers, would be heard by Bombay High Court on November 24.

The petition will come up for hearing before Dr Justice B P Saraf and Justice A V Sakhare, according to Anand Grover, counsel for the petitioner.The petition, filed by All India Blue Star Employees Federation, urges the Court to strike down proviso to Section 10 (10C) of Income Tax Act, 1961 and rule 2B (a) (III) and (IV) of Income Tax Rules 1962.

Gawli aide killed in encounter

Gangster Dileep Wankhede, owing allegiance to the Gawli gang, was killed in an encounter with Thane district rural police at Bhayander early today.

According to police sources, Wankhede and three others were spotted near the Trivedi construction site moving in a blue-coloured vehicle suspiciously.

Seeing the police patrol party, occupants of the vehicle fired at the policemen. PSI Naik was hit, but he was saved due to the bullet-proof jacket he was wearing. Police fired at least twenty to twenty-five rounds in retaliation at the gang members. Wankhede was seriously wounded in the firing and was taken to Bhayander local hospital, where he was declared dead before admission.Pension after 12 years

For 89-year-old freedom fighter Baburao Narayan Nilaver, it was easier fighting the British than struggling for grant of pension. After 14 years of arduous struggle, Bombay High Court has finally ordered the government to award pension to Nilaver under Swatantra Sainik Pension Scheme from June last. Nilaver had applied for grant of pension in 1983.He served legal notice on the government in December last.
