n THE designated TADA court here today rejected a petition, filed by Sanjay Dutt, film star and accused in the serial blasts case, seeking permission to visit Salt Lake in USA for shooting of a film.
The designated TADA Judge P D Kode noted that Dutt was required to be present before the court because deputy commissioner of police K Bishnoi, who had recorded the film star’s confession, was in the witness box. Dutt’s lawyer, Satish Maneshinde, told that the actor might prefer an appeal before the Supreme Court.
MBBS service rule stayed
n A division bench of the Bombay high court, in an ad interim order, has stayed last year’s notification stipulating one year service in rural hospitals for MBBS students seeking admission to post graduate medical course. Admitting a group of writ petitions challenging the one-year compulsory service, Justice A C Agarwal and Justice Sudhakar Gundewar allowed the state to an appeal before the higher court.
Skip I-day fete, PM urged
n THE Mumbai Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (MPYCC) today urged Prime Minister I K Gujral not to participate in the August nine function organised by the state government in Mumbai to commemorate the golden jubilee of `Quit India’ movement.
Congress president Kesri has already decided not to attend , MPYCC president C S Sapra said. “If the PM attends the function, we will welcome him with black flags,” Sapra said.
Maid jumps to death
A maid servant of a Congress member of state legislative council committed suicide in the multi-storeyed MLA hostel `Manora’, near Mantralaya, this evening.
According to sources at the Cuffe Parade police station, the woman working as a maid with ( MLC) P Gupta’s sister, jumped from the 10th floor window at about 5 pm and died on the spot. Family sources said the maid servant was mentally disturbed.
