MUMBAI, June 20: One person died and two others were injured in a massive landslide – the second in the last 24 hours after the one at Kandivli – at Santosh Nagar slum, Ashok Hill No 3, Ghatkopar (West).
The landslide occurred at 12.40 pm, crushing at least four huts, said BMC sources. The deceased was identified as Bhanudas Jogdankar (35), while two others – Mohammed Sayyad and Ali – were rushed to Rajawadi hospital. Sayyad was unconscious and Ali in a state of shock when reports last came in.
Two fire engines, two rescue vans and two ambulances were rushed to the spot, but incessant rains made their task difficult. Reports indicate that at least three more persons are feared to be trapped under the rubble, and their survival chances are slim.
The slums have already been vacated as more landslides from the surrounding hills are feared. The BMC has also alerted hutment dwellers at Kajupada, Hanuman Tekri, Kulupwadi, Raidongri, Devipada, Bhoot Bungalow in Borivali east and Khan Compound at Rawalpada in Dahisar east. They have been requested to shift to safer places.
The BMC has also set up a security control room at the Veer Jijamata Udyan at Byculla to address complaints regarding the uprooting of trees. This can be contacted on phone no 3727131. Complaints in this regard can be registered at the Byculla fire brigade headquarters on phone number 101, Andheri fire brigade station on 6205301, Marol fire brigade station on 6210940 and Vikhroli fire station on 5170730.
