S.A.S. NAGAR, Nov 19: The residents of Mullanpur Garibdass village under Ropar district located in the vicinity of Chandigarh complain that they have been denied drinking water since November 14.Though there are two tubewell motors in the village, both have been lying out of order since November 14, thereby causing acute water scarcity. Moreover, one of the motors has reportedly been lying abandoned for the last eight months due to the "indifferent" attitude of the Public Health Department. In the absence of a water tank, people have been forced to fetch water from far flung areas. "This issue has been raised with the officials concerned time and again in the last one week, but no action has been taken so far," the residents charged.Public Health officials when contacted said that an order for a new tubewell motor has been placed. "The problem will be resolved, once the new motor is received", said a senior official.Besides, feeding a population of about 15,000 residents of the village, the only tubewell of the area is serving the needs of another eight adjoining villages.Demanding stern action against the officials concerned, the Mullanpur Garibdass Welfare Club convener Arvind Puri has urged the Punjab Government to provide two more tubewells to avoid water scarcity in the future.
