Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today asserted that there were no serious charges against the prisoners released by his government.

Dismissing reports that his government was setting militants free, Mufti said: ‘‘Some people against whom there were no serious charges were released.’’ He was addressing a public rally here after distributing relief among drought-hit saffron growers.

Mufti said he would try to build consensus at the national level for a dialogue to put an end to the ongoing bloodshed in the Valley. He urged militants to return to the mainstream ‘‘as there was no need for the gun to put one’s point of view across’’.

‘‘The largest political party (Congress) of the country is appreciating the need for a dialogue and the NDA Government at the Centre is also recognising the need to provide a healing touch. There is no alternative to winning over the hearts of the people to usher in a positive change,’’ he said.

Mufti said his party will fulfil all the promises it has made in the election manifesto. ‘‘My government’s effort is to end violence and get people of the state out of hardships.’’

The CM said he would persuade the Centre to initiate a dialogue with elected people’s representatives of the state. ‘‘The Prime Minister was committed to such a dialogue, as he had announced it from Red Fort in his August 15 speech to the nation,’’ he said.

Mufti said the recent elections have provided an opening for positive change and he would spare no efforts to minimise inconvenience to people. ‘‘People want peace. They are desperate to get out of this situation,’’ he said.

UDHAMPUR: Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed granted appointment letters to families of 43 militant victims at a function held here on Saturday, four years after the previous National Conference government promised them employment. Most of the families had migrated to Pouni and Talwara in Reasi tehsil after they lost their sole earning members to militant attacks. The Chief Minister also ordered disbursement of ration to these families. — ENS
