J-K Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today ordered immediate eviction of encroachers from Hygam wetland. The villagers had broken the embankments to drain the water out and later converted it into a paddy field.
The Chief Minister’s order follows a campaign in The Indian Express on how villagers, with tacit political support and negligence of authorities, grabbed hundred of acres of wetland.
Speaking to mediapersons here, Sayeed said all the land that had been taken away by the villagers would be reclaimed and all encroachments dismantled. Last September, villagers had burst bunds to drain water out of the wetland.
Then they erected bund blocking water from two feeders into the wetland. The three villages, with a population of more than 12,000, reportedly had the backing of then Social Welfare Minister Iftikar Ansari who offered them political protection.
