Underscoring the need for a two-pronged strategy to tackle the Naxalite problem in Bihar, Governor Buta Singh on Monday said much needs to be done on the law and order front to ensure a peaceful existence for the people.
‘‘We have not not been able to achieve what we had expected to achieve on the law and order front. Much more is still needed to be done for a peaceful existence of the people of Bihar,’’ he said at the Independence Day function held at the Gandhi Maidan.
Identifying Naxalism as a major stumbling block in the path of the state’s development, the Governor stressed the need for a two-pronged strategy to tackle the menace. “Poverty has a major role in growth of Naxalite movement. Our strategy to address the problem must also take this into account. While we are modernising our security apparatus to combat Naxalism, we are also striking at the root of the menace —poverty,” he said.
Singh said the administration has made available additional funds to the 17 extremist-hit districts to launch welfare schemes for the poor.
