The All India Parliamentary Forum for Tibet on Monday expressed solidarity with the people of Tibet and urged the Government to persuade China to resolve the issue through peaceful negotiations with the Dalai Lama. Lok Sabha MPs Pratibha Singh, M A Kaarabela Swain, B Mehta and Thupstan Chhewang were present at a conference organised by the Forum along with the Core Group for Tibetan Cause and Friends of Tibet to denounce the violent repression by the Chinese authorities.
“The International community should rise to the occasion and India must do the same. Just expressing ‘distress’ is not enough,” said B Mehta, BJD MP from Cuttack.
MP Kiren Rijiju added, “We must take a strong stand and ask China to start a dialogue with the Dalai Lama who is not even demanding complete autonomy.”
The Forum said it “strongly condemns the unabated campaign of repression unleashed on innocent Tibetans, reinforced by the more severe current brutalities by the People’s Republic of China Government. The Forum demands the release of all arrested demonstrators and all other Tibetan protestors”. The signatories to the statement included MPs Jitin Prasad, Sachin Pilot, Deepender Hooda, among 48 others.
N K Trikha, national convener Core Group for Tibetan Cause, said the group had written to the PM asking for a pro-active stance to be adopted by the Government on the issue. “The Chinese have kept all journalists out of Tibet. We demand that the press should be permitted in the Tibet Autonomous Region and peaceful demonstrations should be permitted too.” said Trikha.
