Over 280 Shiv Sainiks, including Sena MP Chandrakant Khare, were today arrested from Varanasi district for breach of peace while organising a religious programme for ‘‘liberating’’ the Gyanvapi mosque, a senior police official said.

The Sainiks were arrested while they were on way to the Nehru Park where they wanted to perform a ‘Gyanvapi Mukti Yagna’, Circle Inspector Amrendra Pratap Singh told PTI here.

The Sena parliamentarian was arrested near Tarna area in the outskirts of the city while he was on his way to participate in the programme, he said. The Sainiks were taken to the police lines from where they are likely to be released later, the official said.

The policemen also seized various items, including chairs and carpets from Nehru Park, which the Sainiks had hired for the programme, he said.

Over 60 Sainiks were arrested in Mughalsarai in neighbouring Chandauli district while they were heading towards Varanasi for participating in the programme, Singh said. Elaborate security arrangements have been made in the district and paramilitary personnel deployed on all sensitive points.
