COMMACK, Aug 24: A season’s worth of frustration will end for either Carlos Moya of Spain or Australian Patrick Rafter as both took semi-final wins yesterday to set up a showdown in the final of the Hamlet Cup.

Moya has lost four finals this season, including the Australian open. Rafter has lost four finals this season as well. One of them will win his first title of the year later today.

Moya and Rafter both advanced to with straight-set victories.

The fifth-seeded Moya eliminated fellow-Spaniard Julian Alonso 6-2 6-3, while eighth seed Rafter upended sixth-seeded Thomas Enqvist of Sweden 6-4 6-4.

Moya stopped Alonso after his dream match on Friday against second seed Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia, where he joined Australian Mark Philippoussis and Briton Greg Rusedski as the only players ever to crack a 140 mph (225 kph) serve.

Schalken stuns Costa

BOSTON: Unseeded Dutchman Sjeng Schalken scored his second big upset in as many days, eliminating fifth seed Albert Costa of Spain yesterday to reach the final of the US Pro Championships against second-seeded Marcelo Rios of Chile.

The 20-year-old Schalken, ranked 79th in the world, ousted top seed Alex Corretja of Spain on Friday in his unlikely charge after his first title of the year.

Rios routed temperamental American Jeff Tarango 6-4 6-3 after dispensing with both Hernan Gumy of Argentina and Italy’s Renzo Furlan on Friday to make up for Thursday’s rain delays.

Davenport triumphs

STONE MOUNTAIN: Lindsay Davenport completed another triumphant run at the Olympic Tennis Stadium by trouncing Sandrine Testud of France yesterday to win the $450,000 US Women’s Hardcourt Championships.

The seventh-ranked American completed another run of four wins without the loss of a set with a 6-4 6-1 victory over the unseeded Testud.The fourth-seeded Davenport received $79,000 for her victory while Testud collected $36,000.
