PARIS, JUNE 2: Tournament favourite Marcelo Rios was dumped out of the French Open tennis tournament in dramatic fashion today as Carlos Moya set up an all-Spanish semifinal at Roland Garros.Moya's 6-1, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 quarter-final victory means Rios misses out on recapturing the world No 1 spot from Pete Sampras. The Chilean third seed needed to reach the last four here to leapfrog to the top of the rankings.Moya, seeded 12, will now play compatriot and close friend Felix Mantilla for a place in Sunday's final after the 15th seed defeated 1995 champion Thomas Muster 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 earlier today. In the women's event, Martina Hingis underlined her supremacy in the sport by eliminating eighth seed Venus Williams 6-3, 6-4.The Swiss world No 1 next meets three-times champion Monica Seles after she came from a set down to beat Jana Novotna 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.The bottom half of the draw sees Spain's Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, seeded four, meet world No 2 Lindsay Davenport after the American ousteddefending champion Iva Majoli 6-1, 5-7, 6-3.But the real drama of the day was provided by Moya who came on to court central all guns blazing and stole the first set from Rios before the Chilean could get out of first gear.Rios countered in the second set but was powerless to stop an irrepressible Moya from stealing his thunder, and the match in four thrilling sets.Tomorrow will see Cedric Pioline play Hicham Arazi and Alex Corretja play Filip Dewulf to decide the remaining two quarter-finals.Hingis proved her point that she is streets ahead of the pack by destroying Williams. She crushed the American's threat clinically and ruthlessly on court central with a virtually error-free display as she sets her sights on the one Grand Slam title still to elude her.Hingis outplayed Williams with her deft touch and clever court sense. She never looked rushed or off balance or rushed as she grabbed total control.Even a bathroom break by Williams with Hingis serving for the match could not dent herconcentration and the 17-year-old closed it out after one hour 22 minutes of near-perfect tennis.Davenport, on the other hand, struggled a little on court Suzanne Lenglen before disposing of Majoli. The Croat, seeded 10, has not had a good year but was finding her form of old at Roland Garros and Davenport had to be near her best to go through.Sanchez-Vicario, French champion in 1989 and 1994, avenged a straight sets victory by Patty Schnyder in Hamburg last month by ousting the 19-year-old from her first Grand Slam quarter-final.After racing through the first set, the Spaniard allowed Schnyder to settle and the Swiss took full advantage, levelling on a 7-5 tiebreak. That effort, though, signalled the end of her resistance and Sanchez- vicario marched through the deciding set without dropping a game. Sanchez-Vicario has now reached at least the semi-final stage eight times in her 12 visits here.HOW THE SEEDS FAREDMen's singles (quarter-finals): 15-Felix Mantilla (Spa) bt ThomasMuster (Aut) 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3; 12-Carlos Moya (Spain) bt 3-Marcelo Rios (Chi) 6-1, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.Men's doubles (semi-finals): 3-Mahesh Bhupathi/Leander Paes (Ind) bt Julian Alonso (Spain)/Nicolas Lapentti (Ecuador) 6-3, 6-4; 1-Jacco Eltingh/Paul Haarhuis (Netherlands) bt 7-Donald Johnson/Francisco Montana (US) 6-3, 6-2.Women's singles (fourth round): 3-Jana Novotna (Czech Rep) bt Anna Kournikova (Rus) 6-7 (2-7) 6-3 4-2.Quarter-finals: 1-Martina Hingis (Swi) bt 8-Venus Williams 6-4, 6-4; 4-Sanchez-Vicario (Spa) bt Patty Schnyder (Swi) 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-0; 2-Lindsay Davenport (USA) bt 10-Iva Majoli (Croatia) 6-1, 5-7, 6-3; 6-Monica Seles (USA) bt 3-Jana Novotna (Czech Rep) 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.Men's singles (fourth round): Cedric Pioline (Fra) bt Marat Safin (Russia) 7-5, 4-6, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4; Filip Dewulf (Bel) bt Francisco Clavet (Spa) 7-5, 6-3, 6-1.
