MUMBAI, June 13: The Centre has permitted the Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party Government to increase seats in two of the medical colleges – Government Medical College, Aurangabad, and Indira Gandhi Medical College, Nagpur, from the ensuing academic session.

Director of Medical Education and Research (DMER) S K Ganeriwal said while the seats in the Aurangabad Medical College have been increased from 100 to 150, the seats in Indira Gandhi Medical College in Nagpur have been increased from 60 to 100. He added that after the increase, the number of seats in 11 government-run medical colleges has gone up to 1,250. “After we submitted the proposal for increasing the number of seats, a high-level team of the Medical Council of India (MCI) inspected the two colleges. But, it rejected the proposal saying the facilities were not upto the mark. Then, we recruited additional staff leading MCI to accept our proposal,” he added.
