The BCCI is studying a proposal to double the number of Ranji matches from the 2007-08 season. The proposal follows a series of discussions within the Board to increase the quantum of first-class cricket, said BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah. “We are planning to increase the number of Ranji Trophy matches from the next season. According to the existing format, each team gets to play about seven to eight Ranji matches in the season. We believe that number is insufficient and want to increase it to 12 or 13 for each team,” said Shah. However, he clarified that the new plan is still in its early stages and is far from getting the green signal.
