The Lakhimpur Kheri police will move court to seek remand of Monu Mittal, main accused in the murder of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) official S Manjunath — a graduate from IIM-Lucknow.

‘‘We have already taken a decision to ask the court for Monu’s police remand. We will then interrogate him thoroughly and collect extra evidence to ensure his conviction in this case,’’ said P K Shukla, the investigating officer. ‘‘We just want to link all the evidence together now,’’ he added.

Monu’s cellphone records would work as corroborative evidence to support his confession. ‘‘The printout confirms his presence in Sitapur district after Manjunath’s murder. Monu’s confessional statement is corroborated by the printout. It will make his statement admissible in court,’’ said Shukla. Police sources said Monu had destroyed his SIM card after Manjunath’s murder.

Manjunath, the IOC area sales manager posted in Lakhimpur Kheri, was shot dead on the night of November 19 after he sealed a petrol pump — Mittal Automobiles — in Gola Gokarn area for selling adulterated fuel. Monu Mittal is the son of the petrol pump owner, Sulakshan Kumar Mittal.

Police are also examining Manjunath’s cellphone records.

Manjunath had two cellphones with him — one BSNL number and another of Reliance. Police have already procured the records.

‘‘It takes time to ascertain the identity of the persons whose number figures in printouts. We are in touch with the authorities concerned of both cellphone companies to get these details,’’ said Shukla.

The police, meanwhile, have failed to find any specific report made by Manjunath against Mittal Automobiles in the IOC official’s computer.

‘‘The correspondence is mainly between Manjunath and his head office at Bareily. Most of the correspondence is related to proper functioning of the petrol pumps in the district,’’ said a source.
