NAGPUR, FEB 28: In a tragic incident, a 19-year-old polytechnic student ended life by jumping from the fourth floor flat at Panchayatan Apartments on RTPS road, Laxmi Nagar, on Sunday evening after she was reportedly molested by her three male friends.

The girl, Yogeshwari Madan Motghare, a IInd year student of Shri Datta Meghe Polytechnic and a resident of Jagnath Budhwari, had visited her classmates at the apartment when the gory incident occurred. Police have rounded up a engineering student and are in search of two others, who are suspected to have molested the girl.

The student arrested by the police has been identified as T Satyaprakash, a resident of Dharampeth and IInd year student of the polytechnic. The other two absconding students are: Prakash Singh (a resident of Darbangha in Bihar and classmate of Yogeshwari) and Santosh Kumar (a resident of Begusarai district of Bihar and a final BE student).

The serenity at the Panchayatan Apartments — which is occupied mostly by middle-class salaried families — was broken by the shocking death of Yogeshwari. The death was first noticed by some children, who informed their parents. As the flat-owners rushed outside their homes, they noticed the body of the girl lying in a pool of blood.

Not able to identify the victim, the flat-owners summoned the police and also informed Ashok Deshpande, the owner of the flat. Deshpande had let out the flat to engineering students for the past seven years.

By the time police reached the spot, some of the engineering students also reached and identified the girl. The body was immediately shifted to Government Medical College for post mortem.

When the police entered the apartment, they found all the three occupants of the flat, Prakash Singh, Santosh Kumar, and Kaushik Ghosh (a IInd year YCCE student) missing.

However, the breakthrough came when Kaushik soon returned. He was reportedly ignorant of the suicide and told police that he was out for some personal work. He directed police to Y Satyaprakash, who used to frequent the flat and was a close friend and class mate of both Yogeshwari and Prakash Singh. The Ranapratap Nagar Police moved swiftly and rounded Satyaprakash.

Satyaprakashn was interrogated by senior officials when he spilled the beans. According to Satyaprakash, he met Yogeshwari yesterday at the home of a common friend who resides in a nearby locality. Yogeshwari reached there to collect laboratory journals. Satyaprakash too went there for the same. When Satyaprakash learnt that Yogeshwari also wanted to copy the journals, he asked her to join him at Prakash Singh’s flat, so that both could do the work jointly. Yogeshwari agreed.

Both Yogeshwari and Satyaprakash reportedly arrived at the flat at around 3.30 pm. According to Satyaprakash, Yogeshwari was busy copying the journals when the trio molested her. Caught offguard by this indecent behaviour, Yogeshwari reportedly snubbed the trio, but suddenly jumped down from the gallery of the flat.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone I, Sanjay Kumar told The Indian Express that interrogation of Prakash Singh and Santosh Singh would provide further clues in the case.
