Taking exception to Sonia Gandhi’s charge that he was trying to turn the state into ‘‘Godse’s Gujarat’’, state Chief Minister Narendra Modi accused the Congress president of indulging in slander — of the state and its people.
He said Sonia had rushed here with her fauj to demand his resignation but her party would be defeated by the people.
Addressing a function here on Wednesday to mark the 43rd Foundation Day of Gujarat, Modi said had Sonia really cared for the people of the state, she would have also come here when earthquake hit the state.
He said the people had been at the receiving end of a slander campaign launched by the Congress but that would not take the party anywhere. Gujarat being a peaceful state, everyone was welcome here, Modi said.
Speaking about the debate in Parliament on the censure motion on Gujarat violence, Modi dared his political opponents to get him ousted. He termed the debate as disappointing and said it did not help ease the situation. ‘‘I am neither after power nor was I ordained to be in power forever,’’ Modi said.
