Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi again attacked Congress chief Sonia Gandhi today, this time over her declaration of assets on Tuesday. Referring to her owning an ancestral house in Italy, Modi asked at a rally here: ‘‘What does this mean? Indian girls married in a poor family will not talk of the riches they have left behind in their maternal homes. Rather, they would proudly talk of the homes they are married into. Obviously, it’s a fact Madam Sonia seems to have missed.’’

Modi was the star speaker at the rally held in former Lok Sabha speaker Manohar Joshi’s Mumbai North Central constituency. Addressing the moderate crowd in the predominantly South Indian-Gujarati locality, Modi devoted most of his 15-minute speech to criticising the Congress president whom he referred to as ‘‘Begum Sonia’’.

Modi also accused the Congress of ‘‘having an understanding’’ with the perpetrators who burnt 57 innocent pilgrims alive in Godhra. ‘‘Has the Congress promised to free those accused?’’ he asked. ‘‘If not, why is Congress spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal fighting to free those people who have committed such a heinous crime. Can Congress be honest to itself and tell me they are not trying to break the country?’’
