Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digivjay Singh today alleged that the riots in Gujarat went on for months because Narendra Modi wanted so.

‘‘If the chief minister of a state does not want communal riots, it cannot happen. The Gujarat CM wanted communal riots so they took place,’’ Singh said at the 185th birth centenary celebrations of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, the founder of Aligarh Muslim University.

He claimed Madhya Pradesh has seen no communal riot in the last nine years of Congress rule: ‘‘How can we criticise the Akshardham attack when action and reaction is on in the name of religion — the riots in Gujarat after Godhra.”

Singh said that be it the concerns about population explosion or the spread of the ISI network in the country, Muslims were being unnecessarily targeted.

He said no Census figure has shown that only Muslims are responsible for the rise in population. How can Muslims be called ISI agents when statistics say there are more non-Muslim working as agents for Pakistan, he asked. All kinds of rumours and misconceptions are being spread by vested interests, especially the politicians.

People should oppose politicians who spread misconceptions and communal divide, Singh said. Wherever there are communal disturbances, the majority community is responsible, he said.

Donning a trademark Muslim cap, he said: ‘‘Jazbaati log hain. Woh dil sey jyaada sochchtey hain, dimaag sey kam (They (Muslims) are emotional people who think more from their hearts than heads).’’

The Congress leader announced minority schools in Madhya Pradesh on the lines of the Aligarh Muslim University. The government, he said, will donate land and Rs 1 crore. The proposed institutions will provide education from class VII to post-graduation.
