
NEW DELHI, January 25: Modern School (Barakhamba Road) and Springdales School (Pusa Road) registered contrasting wins today to qualify for the Super League of the Limca Soccer Tournament. Modern defeated Vinay Nagar Bengali School 1-0 after dominating for most part, while Springdales got the better of DPS (Mathura Road) 5-3 via tie-breaker, after the teams were level 1-1, at the end of extra time.
Modern were on the offensive from the start, making repeated forays. However, their forwards kept fumbling at the goal-mouth. After a barren first half, Modern surged ahead through a spectacular goal by Wang Han. On a pass from Nitin Pant from the left, Han beat his shadow, cut in and let loose a cracker which swelled the net.
The Vinay Nagar boys tried hard for the equaliser in the last quarter but in vain.
Their best chance was frittered away when Nitin Sarkar shot over from close with the goal-keeper at his mercy.
The DPS-Springdales match was evenly matched, with both the teams striking once in the firstsession. Springdales were the first to score through Varun Bhalla in the ninth minute.
Varun put the ball home when the DPS goal-keeper Prasun charged out and failed to gather the ball properly.
DPS fought back to get the equaliser in the 22nd minute. Arihant moved up from the left and took a shot from close that rebounded off the Springdales custodian Saket Agarwal, and Kartikey pounced on it to score.
After the dead-lock in the second session and extra time, the issue was settled in the tie-breaker when Springdales converted four of their five kicks — through Bharat Singh, Kanav Anand, Sonal Metha, Varun Bhalla.
In other action, a golden goal in the second minute into the extra time by Stephen enabled Tagore International School to beat Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan for a place in the Super League.SS Khalsa School, (Lajpat Nagar) also made it to the Super League with a solitary goal victory over Upras Public School. The match-winner was scored by Rajesh Arya in the 46th minute off a pass from Naveen Tanwar.
There will be no match on Monday and the Super League will start from January 27 at two venues — Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and Modern School (Barakhamba Road).
