CHANDIGARH, Nov 11: A model presentation of the United Nations assembly was staged by city students at the Panjab University campus today. The inter-school competition was organised by students of Bhavan Vidyalya and sponsored by Chandigarh Rotary Club. Addressing the gathering, R.K. Sabu said that the attempt was not to present a "mock" session of the UN assembly but a "model" session. "It is based on the young minds’ concept of UN," he said.

The schools represented various member countries on the basis of a draw. And the kids were dressed up in the national costumes of the countries they were representing.

They deliberated on the structural changes of UNO and human rights in the morning session, and on the International Economic Order and NPT in the afternoon session. Members said that the mad race for nuclear weapons should be be stopped at the earliest, and "helping the economically weak countries was the need of the hour."

In the best speaker category, Ishita Aggarwal of Sacred Heart School and Vaibhav Ghai of St. Kabir bagged the first prize, while Shailaja Thakur and Sachin Kaushik of Bhavan Vidyalya won the second prize. The best costume prize went to the team from Bhavan Vidyalya, who represented Pakistan, and the second prize was bagged by St. John’s, who represented Egypt.

The overall best trophy was bagged by Bhavan Vidyalya.
