May 1: Traffic on the busy Dehu Road-Katraj Westerly Bypass came to a grinding halt for nearly two hours as a mob turned violent after a private luxury bus rammed into a scooter killing a couple instantaneously at Kivale village near Dehu Road this evening. The 1000-strong mob damaged the bus by pelting stones before blocking the road to register their protest against the traffic hazards. The police are well in control of the situation, said Assistant Police Inspector Dinkar Pawar.Mahadeo Damu Yevle (58) of Thergaon village and his wife Laxmibai (55) were going to Talegaon Dabhade to attend a marriage when the luxury bus of Andheri-based Diana Travels dashed against their scooter. The incident took place near PCMC octroi post at Kivle village around 5.15 am, State Highway Police said. The Yevles, who were flung away due to the impact of the dash, were trapped under the wheels of the bus and died on the spot, API Pawar said. The bodies lay under the bus for nearly an hour as the police found it impossible to pull out the Yevles' without shifting the bus, he said. A crane had to be summoned from Khandala to remove the bus due to the non-availability of cranes in the area, he added. Later, the bodies were sent to the Yashvantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital in Pimpri for postmortem.Immediately after the mishap, a mob gathered at the site and started pelting stones at the bus and smashing its window panes. Later, the villagers squatted on the road bringing the traffic to a standstill.API Pawar said the accident was caused due to several trucks parked on the carriage way in front of the octroi post. Since the octroi post is located too close to the road, the drivers tend to park their vehicles on the carraigeway leaving little space for other vehicles to ply, he stated. The bus driver was trying to overtake a truck parked in the middle of the road when the mishap took place, he pointed out.Meanwhile, the Dehu Road police have filed a case against the bus driver.
