Daniel Nestor of Canada and Russia’s Elena Likhovtseva lifted their first Australian Open title today, beating Belarus pair Max Mirnyi and Victoria Azarenka in the mixed doubles final.

The unseeded Nestor and Likhovtseva won 6-4, 6-4 to avenge their loss in the final last year to Martina Hingis and Mahesh Bhupathi. “It’s a great feeling to have won today,” Nestor said.

It was a third Grand Slam doubles titles for Nestor but his first in the mixed.

Likhovtseva had previously won one Grand Slam title — the mixed doubles at Wimbledon in 2002 with Bhupathi.

It was a double disappointment for Mirnyi who, teamed with Sweden’s Jonas Bjorkman, lost the men’s doubles final yesterday to American twins Bob and Mike Bryan.

“Daniel and Elena have had a very good rounded career and I’m sure this trophy will look good in their collection.” said Mirnyi.

Azarenka, 17, added: “It’s been the best experience of my life, even though we lost, it was great.”
