The world No. 49 lost 18-21, 13-21 to local qualifier Hoon Min Jung, ranked 232 in the world. The win set up a second round clash with world No. 7 Jie Yao of the Netherlands. Saina Nehwal almost missed her berth in the second round.

The world No. 51 was made to sweat by little-known Korean Yeo Sook Yoon before pulling through 21-12, 19-21, 21-18e. Saina next meets Yoshimi Hataya of Japan before coming up against World No. 10 Japan’s Kaori Mori in the third round.
