AHMEDABAD, DECEMBER 18: After an exceptional run on the first two days, India experienced a mixed day today in the Second Asian Youth Chess Championship. Though the big names P Harikrishna, Koneru Humpy, Valay Parikh recorded wins, Abhijit Gupta, Rahul Sangma and Tania Sachdev lost to lower ranked players.

Gupta, the under-10 top seed, ran into time trouble and was forced to resign against compatriot G Rohit. Sangma went down against Son Ngoc Truong (Vietnam) in 62 moves. In the under-14 section, Tania Sachdev, playing a positionally imperfect game, suffered her first defeat of the tournament against fifth seed C Delphin (India). Delphin is now the sole leader of the group following third seed Sadi Paridar (Iran) being upset in the third round by Jaya Arunamathi (India).

Girls’ under-10 top seed Mary Ann Gomes remained unbeaten with a 40-move win over Haamra Yulduz (Uzbekistan). Humpy, playing black, prevailed over S Rangarajan in the under-12 boys’ event.
