The CPI, which describes the claims made against Left and Congress leaders in The Mitrokhin Archive II as ‘‘nothing new’’ says the timing of the book has much to do with India’s emergence as an important power.
‘‘They are trying to create a condition of destabilisation, for which they are targeting the Congress and the Left,’’ said D Raja, national secretary, CPI. According to him, the book is a no more than a politically fabricated concoction by the British and US intelligence.
‘‘The UPA is a coalition government committed to have an independent foreign policy and despite the Indo-US nuclear agreement and the Bush-Manmohan Singh joint statement, India could not be pressurised to succumb totally to US and British designs,’’ he said.
About the documents that form the basis of the book, he said that intelligence agencies fabricated facts and there was no substance to the allegations.
On the CPI’s links with the former Soviet Union, Raja said, ‘‘We had good relations with the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and do not regret it. Even now we have good relations with the communist parties of the Russian Federation.’’
