MARCH 17: Chief Minister Manohar Joshi said on Tuesday that a clarification had been sought from the Mithibai college management regarding the denial of admission to an applicant, who later complained about it to the authorities.
He was replying to the Opposition’s queries on cases where Marathi-speaking students were allegedly refused admission to colleges run by religious and linguistic minorities.
Assembly proceedings were disrupted when Opposition members Mohammed Ali Khan, Ashok Dhatrak, Lokhandwala, Nawab Malik and others raised the point during the question-answer session today.
The members wanted to know if any such incident had taken place anywhere in the state, whether the government had conducted an inquiry and if any disciplinary action had been initiated against those found guilty.
Minister of State for Education Anil Deshmukh said in his reply that the state government had detected one case in which a girl was denied admission to Mithibai Junior College in Vile Parle.
In his writtenreply, Education Minister Sudhir Joshi said the deputy director of the education department had conducted an inquiry into the matter. However, neither Deshmukh nor Joshi were able to elaborate on action taken against those responsible.
As the Opposition members grew increasingly agitated, the CM intervened to say that the government had been able to detect just one case. “The girl had complained to the authorities, hence we initiated the inquiry. But as we had heard the complainant’s version, it was also necessary for us to listen to the college authorities. The government has sought clarification from the college management and thus no action has been initiated as yet. But as soon as we get the clarification, we will take proper action,” Joshi said.
