The newly-constituted women’s selection committee made a bold opening statement when it sacked Mithali Raj as India skipper in wake of the team’s disastrous outing in England recently, and elevated Jhulan Goswami to the top spot for the tour to Australia.

All-rounder Rumeli Dhar has been named as the new vice-captain of the 15-member team that also marks the return of Anjum Chopra, who was overlooked for the Asia Cup and the England series. The new committee comprising Sandhya Aggarwal, Reshma Gandhi, Poornima Rao, Mithu Mukherjee and Vrinda Bhagat also excluded veteran left-arm spinner Neetu David, Hemlata Kala, Asha Rawat and Karuna Jain.

The Indian team is scheduled to play five one-day matches and one T20 on the tour. The matches are significant since the women’s World Cup will be held in Sydney Australia early next year.

The team: Jhulan Goswami (captain); Rumeli Dhar (vice-president), Jaya Sharma, Sulakshana Naik, Mithali Raj, Anjum Chopra, M D Trishkamani, Amita Sharma, Priyanka Roy, Snehal Pradhan, Gouher Sultana, Anangha Deshpande, Reema Malhotra, Nooshin-al-Khader, Seema Pujare. Stand byes: Daina David, Swarupa Kadam, Latika Kumari. Purnima Rao (Manager), Sudha Shah (coach)
