Talks with the Hurriyat have become crucial for Centre’s interlocutor N.N. Vohra who reached Srinagar on a week-long visit today.

Though there has been a softening in Hurriyat’s stance, the Government has not received any clear indication about its willingness to talk to Vohra. ‘‘There are a lot of groups like the Hizbul-Mujahideen who will decide whether they want to talk based on the Hurriyat response,’’ sources said.

The fact that the Prime Minister has again offered the olive branch to Pakistan is also likely to play a role in the Kashmir mission. ‘‘A lot will depend on how Pakistan responds,’’ an official said. Vohra’s brief was to talk to the elected representatives, parties who participated in elections and the separatists.

‘‘Though Vohra may not give an invitation to Hurriyat for talks, it has been made clear by the PM, and earlier by L.K. Advani, that it was welcome. It’s a departure from the earlier stand of ‘no talks’ with Hurriyat,’’ sources said.
