Putting up an united stand against terrorism, minority community leaders staged a maun upvas (silent fast) at the foot of the Mahatma Gandhi statue on Tuesday in Lucknow, protesting the weekend explosions in Bangalore and Ahmedabad.

Convened by All India United Muslim Morcha president M A Siddiqqi, participants congregated at the “dharna” site sporting a white strip of cloth on the lower part of their faces to condemn the blasts.

“No religion condones the shedding of the blood of innocent citizens,” noted Shia scholar Maulana Kalbe Sadiq, who is also vice-president of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), said.

Rajendra Singh Bagga agreed with the Maulana, citing the tenets of Sikhism to support his view. Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangimahali, AIMPLB member, said some “misguided people are linking religion to terrorism.”

Quoting from the Quran, he added that Islam has “nothing to do with terrorism” and the recent acts of terror “must be condemned by everyone in the strongest terms.”

The rector of Nadvatul Ulema and AIMPLB president, Maulana Rabey Hasni Nadvi, also criticised those behind the carnage. “The real motive of the terror is to create a deep rift between the majority and minority communities,” he said.
