The nephew of Anisur Rehman, Minister for Animal Resources and Development, was abducted on October 12. His family allege that a ransom of Rs 20 lakh was demanded on October 22.
Till date, there has been no trace of 40-year-old Mizanur Rehman.
Police said Mizanur, a businessman — a resident of Jayrampur village of Murshidabad — was abducted by a group while on his way back from a yatra. Though there are no eyewitnesses to the abduction, police say the miscreants were more than five in number.
The family was told to pay up the money at a local petrol pump. “We agreed to pay Rs 15 lakh but when we went with the money, there was no one to collect it. Neither did we get Mizanur back,” said his brother Abdul Wahad.
The number from which the ransom call was made was traced to one Abdus Samad Mondal, a resident of Domkal. The day after, he was detained alongwith an associate, Shahi Haque. Samad said the mobile card was not his though it was purchased in his name, said a police source.
“We have got a few clues which we cannot disclose at the moment,” said Basab Dasgupta, Superintendent of Police, Murshidabad.
Insisting that the abduction was not prompted by political rivalry, Anisur Rehman said: “I am satisfied with the progress police made so far. I have full faith in the administration and they will be able to rescue my nephew.”
