A committee of Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Law Minister H.R. Bharadwaj and minister for Personnel and Training Suresh Pachauri is examining whether an independent agency should probe charges levelled by a senior IPS officer accusing Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi of allowing the post-Godhra riots to go out of control.
‘‘The ministerial committee is examining accusations against Modi by Additional Director General of police B.R. Sreekumar and would take a decision soon whether an independent agency should probe it or not,’’ Bharadwaj said.
Senior home ministry officials said that if Sreekumar’s allegations prima-facie show that an offence has been committed then the committee will decide on how it should be investigated. Before this committee will have to check the veracity of the diary in which these allegations have been made. Earlier, Gujarat DGP, A.K. Bhargava had questioned the authenticity of the diary.
Ministry officials said CBI cannot be asked to investigate since it would require a concurrence from Gujarat government which it is unlikely to give. It is understood that committee will consider a judicial probe.
