A cow urine distillate has been found to enhance the activity of anti-cancer drug Taxol, scientists at a CSIR laboratory in Lucknow have revealed.
During experiments carried out by scientists at the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP) in Lucknow, this cow urine distillate at very low concentrations was also seen to have increased the activity of Rifampicin and Ampicillin against gram negative and gram positive bacteria.
This information was provided by Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Panabaka Lakshmi in a written response to a question on the medicinal usefulness of cow urine. The minister said this team of scientists at CIMAP working on new bioactivities had found that a cow urine distillate (kamdhenu ark) obtained from the Gau Vigyan Anusandhan Kendra in Nagpur had a biological activity of a bioenhancer for commonly used antibiotics and anti-cancer drugs.
The minister said the Government was aware that cow urine was being used as an ingredient in various ayurvedic formulations for centuries and that ‘panchgavya’, which is used in ayurvedic medicines, was a mixture of five cow products namely dung, urine, milk, curd and ghee.
