While the border remained quiet for the seventh consecutive day, militants struck today in Anantnag district of south Kashmir and injured 18 policemen including an area SSP and an SHO.

Six of the policemen have been injured seriously.

IGP K. Rajendra Kumar (Kashmir Range) said the militants tossed a grenade at the office of Anantnag SSP Abdul Qayoom Manhas when he and the escort vehicles were preparing to leave. Kumar added that 16 cops, including SHO of the Kokernag Police Station, Ghulam Mohammed Parray, were injured. ‘‘The attack was aimed at him (Manhas) but he is fine. He has splinter injuries on his limb,’’ Kumar said, adding that the six policemen standing guard or accompanying Manhas were critically injured in the incident. They were taken to Srinagar hospital for treatment. Later, a live grenade was detected by police and later neutralised by the the bomb disposal squad at the main bus stand of Anantnag.

Meanwhile, two militants of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) were killed in an encounter with security forces at Riakapran in Shopian area of Pulwama district. Three securitymen were also injured in the incident. Another LeT militant, Syed Iqbal from Pakistan, was killed in the Darishpora forests of Kupwara district in an encounter with troops.
