Worried as he may be about his future, India skiper Sourav Ganguly will have achieved a major milestone when he leads his team out for the first Test versus Zimbabwe here tomorrow. And for coach Greg Chappell it should be a new ’inings’ of sorts.

The two, though, have decided to concentate on the match instead. Sourav will be captaining his 48th Test. This will put him ahead of Sunil Gavaskar and Mohammed Azharuddin as the ones who have led India in the most Tests. For Chappell, it marks his first Test as Indian coach after two one-day series of indifferent results.

Sourav sought to downplay the milestone. “To my eyes the milestone is not a major one. For me the sricket I have played or the one which I will is going to be more satisfying.”

Sourav has captained India in 47 Tests, won 19, lost 13 while 15 have been drawn. Gavaskar won nine, lost eight and drew 30 of his 47 Tests while Azharuddin’s figures read 14-14-9.

Chappell said he was preparing the team no differently than what he had been doing so far for one-day matches. “The criteria is pretty similar. There are certain things in the game of cricket that you need to do well.

“We are looking forward to get into the rhythm of Test matches. It is a series which we need to win and win it well.

Zimbabwe skipper Tatenda Taibu indicated the wicket would not be as overtly in favour of fast bowlers as it is perceived. “It will offer low bounce. The spinners might get some help on the fourth and fifth day.”

Taibu said he had been encouraged by the form of Dion Ebrahim and Terrence Duffin in the three-day game in Mutare.

He also pretty much cleared Heath Streak for the game, though the allrounder may have to undergo a fitness test.

Streak has been experiencing pain in his right knee where he was struck during the Test series against New Zealand last month.
