PUNE, August 14: Minister of State for Housing Raj Purohit today said the State Government would soon consider the demand of the Pune unit of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) to give it 245 hectare land for providing houses to the poor.
He was presiding over a function organised by MHADA at Minatai Thackeray Nagar, near Sharada Niketan, Hingne here today. Governor P.C. Alexander, who was the chief guest, handed over the keys of MHADA’s newly-constructed colony with 244 tenements to the owners.
MHADA Pune unit chairman Vijay Kale said the 244 tenements were allotted to people from lower income group.
The State Government, as per the guidelines issued by the Central Government, aims to construct 77,420 tenements for the poor by next year. The Pune was constructing 19,355 tenements, Kale said.
He said MHADA had identified the land, admeasuring 245 hectares, in five districts of Pune division for constructing the tenements. Raj Purohit issued immediate orders to Divisional Commissioner Arun Bhatia, who was present, to scrutinise MHADA’s proposal and submit a report to the Government. “The land will be made available,” he said.
Alexander was all praise for MHADA for giving top priority to construction of houses for the economically weaker section. “MHADA is not a construction industry. It was established for social justice. I am happy that the houses allotted today were constructed at just Rs. 500 per square feet when the prevailing market rate in the area is over Rs. 1,500 per square feet,” he said.
Efforts should be made to improve the standard of living of the rural population which has migrated to the cities in search of livelihood, he said.
MHADA president Vilas Avchat and State Planning Board executive president Prakash Javdekar said the board would extend full support to the Pune unit in establishing 19,000 tenements by next year.
