KENDRAPARA, SEPT 7: Researchers have claimed to have developed an innovative technique of vegetative propagation of mangroves in the coastal reaches of Mahanadi-Debi river basins in Orissa.
"We have found a method to grow mangroves directly from the plant’s vegetative portions, like leaves or stem without taking recourse to the usual fruit-seed formation process," Prafulla Kumar Mishra, Chief Project Coordinator of Orissa chapter of the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation said.
The foundation is involved in conservation and protection of the state’s coastal wetland and mangrove forest in Bhitarkanika wildlife sanctuary, which is located on the coast between Mahanadi and Baitarani rivers.
The existing mangrove patch in and around the sanctuary is known to be the biggest mangrove area in the country after the Sunderabans.
Mishra said the vegetative propagation method had been successfully conducted during field trials in about ten hectares land in Dangamal and Jagatjore areas with active support from forest officials and local people.
