JAIPUR, JUNE 17: It may be a case of the might being right or just a simple oversight but the occupants of 60 of the 90 quarters at the Jaipur City Police Lines have been found drawing power from the Rajasthan State Electricity Board (RSEB) line without meters.
RSEB Vigilance wing personnel raided the area, disconnected the supply and returned to their office, hoping that the policemen would come begging them to restore their connections. They were, however, in for a disappointment. Barely a couple of hours later, life went on as usual in the area:The entire electrical gadgetry was working, thanks to the policemen’s “self-help” in the restoration of the supply.
RSEB sources said the raid followed a tip-off that the policemen had been engaged in power-theft for a long time. However, they found that a majority of them had not even applied for connections, while some, even after the installation of meters, had bypassed them.
When contacted, Deputy Inspector General G Ajeet Singh Shekhawat told The Indian Express here yesterday that the policemen had been directed, at the time of allotment of houses, to obtain power connections from the RSEB. He claimed that they had been served with eviction notices for failing to comply with this directive.
Meanwhile, power supply in the policemen’s houses had been suspended and a penalty worked out by the Rajasthan State Electricity Board. This is expected to total about Rs 20,000 in each case.
