The Meghalaya Government will take up with the Union Government the latter’s proposal to name the seventh Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Shillong after former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Chief Minister Donkupar Roy told the Assembly on Monday that the prefix ‘Rajiv Gandhi’ for the prestigious B-school would “dilute the brand name of the institution”.
The issue was raised by several legislators in the Assembly. They argued that all the other IIMs in the country did not have a prefix, but a suffix like IIM-Calcutta, IIM-Ahmedabad etc. They said the institute should be known as IIM-Shillong, as was the tradition adopted in other IIMs, where the city’s name was tagged to the B-School.
Roy said that the suggestion of the members to change the nomenclature was “important and appropriate” and the government would do all it could at its disposal.
