Getting Siberian crane back to the country topped India’s agenda as 30 countries today got together to endorse an action plan to protect migratory birds and their habitats.

Environment minister A. Raja said India will support all initiatives to get Siberian crane back to its wetlands. “The last Siberian crane was spotted in India in 2002. No birds have been seen on the third flyway which includes India,” said Crawford Prentice, international technical advisor for the International Crane Foundation.

Meanwhile, Raja said 19 Ramsar sites have been notified and many more are being evaluated for nomination. ‘‘The scientific organisations of the country have recommended over 300 potential sites. The prospect of setting up a National Network of Wetland Protected Area and a National Wetland Policy is also under consideration,’’ the minister said. The meeting is being organized under Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), with the help of the ministry of Environment, Wetlands International, International Crane Foundation (ICF), and Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun. A special session is being dedicated to how to get the Siberian crane back to India.
