SURAT, June 17: District collector R M Shah convened a meeting, on Tuesday, of all district administration departments to discuss ways by which more relief could be sent by the district for the cyclone-affected people of Saurashtra and Kutch. Presiding over the meeting, he stated that it was the duty of every person to help out in the relief and rehabilitation work, adding that while a number of organisations and institutions had individually started collecting funds for relief work, the district administration along with all departments concerned should also help in whatever way it could.

Targets have been fixed for individual departments of the district administration to collect funds for relief work, which will be added to the CM’s relief fund, he stated.

In an appeal to the people of the city and the district, the collector stated that while others have readily come forward to help the city in times of crises like the plague and other natural disasters, it was now the duty of every person of the district to contribute towards the rehabilitation of the cyclone-hit.

As part of the scheme, `Relief Fund’ boxes will be kept at public places, for individuals to contribute, besides a separate cell at the collectorate to accept donations, the collector stated.

He said he would convene a meeting on June 23 again to review the relief work and directed officials of all district administration departments to be present for the meeting. Meanwhile, the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) located in Hazira has contributed Rs 75 lakh towards the cause.

The cheque was presented by Chief Managing Director, NTPC Rajendrasingh to the Prime Minister, according to a release issued here on Wednesday. The Krishak Bharati Co-operative Limited (KRIBHCO) also donated Rs 75 lakh towards relief of the cyclone-hit people.
