The Maharashtra government has submitted the inspection report of the private medical colleges in the state to Governor Mohammad Fazal. Medical Education and Public Health Minister Digvijay Khanvilkar said he will soon call on Fazal to discuss the course of action against the erring colleges.
Following a series of reports in The Indian Express on the lack of facilities in medical colleges, a high-level probe had been initiated at the instance of Fazal who is also the Chancellor of all universities in the state.
‘‘We will abide by his advice,’’ the minister said. An official of the Medical Education department said copies of the reports have also been submitted to Medical Council of India (MCI) as well as Department of Public Health, Government of India. It is the responsibility of the MCI, the regulatory authority for medical education, to initiate stringent action against the erring colleges, he said. The inspection teams comprising deans and professors of state-run medical colleges had pointed out that barring the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College at Wardha controlled by NCP leader Datta Meghe, all the 16 private medical colleges in the state are ill-equipped.
