LONDON, May 10: New Zealand, inspired by a belligerent Craig McMillan, hit Surrey for more than six an over to amass 328 for six.

McMillan topscored with 86 including 10 fours and four sixes as New Zealand enjoyed a rarity in the warm-up matches for the tournament that starts on Friday — 50 overs of batting. They won by 108 runs.

Surrey fell to the medium pace of Roger Twose, who cut through the lower order to take four for 30 off 5.5 overs. Surrey scored 220 off 49.5 overs.

RIVERSIDE: Pakistani opener Shahid Afridi was rushed to hospital after being hit on the elbow during the rain-hit practice match against Durham here today.

But X-rays showed no fracture and Pakistan are hopeful the all-rounder will be fit for their opening World Cup match against the West Indies at Bristol on Sunday.

Afridi, who acts as a top-of-the-order pinch-hitter, retired hurt before torrential rain washed out the match after 10 overs.

Windies in luck

EDGBASTON: WestIndies, whose match against Gloucestershire was abandoned yesterday after 16 overs, had better luck when they made 228 for four off 47 overs against Warwickshire.

Akram attack

SOUTHGATE: Bangladesh reached 203 for two off 43.4 overs against Middlesex thanks to a spirited 80 not out by right-hander Akram Khan and 52 from Shariar Hossain.

They were calculated to have won on a faster scoring rate after Middlesex made 223 for six off 43 overs, Mark Ramprakash hitting 53 not out. Off-spinner Minhajul Abedin took two for 40 in seven overs.

Scotland’s match with Lancashire at Old Trafford was abandoned after 38 overs when Scotland scored 161 for three.

TRENT BRIDGE: Roshan Mahanama, meanwhile, celebrated his return to Sri Lanka’s line-up with an unbeaten 142, paving the way fora 62-run defeat of Nottinghamshire.

Mahanama, dropped for a recent tri-series in India, carried his bat after being promoted as Sanath Jayasuriya’s opening partner. He made his runs off 145 balls, cracking four sixes and nine fours. Sri Lanka made 288 for five.

England make it by one

CHELMSFORD: England, who take on Sri Lanka in the Cup opener on Friday, could only beat Essex by one run after a lackluster performance. Mark Ealham, who had earlier made an unbeaten 37 off 35 balls, had a second spell of four wickets for nine runs.
