MCD unveils plan to paint the town green

As part of the campaign, free saplings will be provided to all those people who want to plant trees in their houses. Ahuja disclosed that an action-plan has been prepared to monitor the campaign and ensure accountability of the staff. Large-scale plantation will also be carried out in parks, green zones and group-housing societies which have been transferred from DDA to MCD, he said.

Under this plan, the supervisor of each zone will maintain a register to record the number of the saplings planted. The register will be examined every fortnight by senior of Ahuja said that 782 tubewells will be installed for watering these plants. Moreover, 21 tankers will be made available for watering plants on roadside. He also said that he had appealed to all MPs, MLAs and councillors to keep a strict watch on the plantation work in their constituency.

Several residents’ associations, NGOs, private companies and environmental organisations have been handed responsibility for maintaining 200 parks and green strips on roadsides. These organisations will also provide metal guards to protect these plants.

The Mayor promised that by September this year, 70 per cent of the plantation work will be done. He has appealed to the residents to support their effort. Municipal Commissioner V.K. Duggal said that they had planted nearly eight lakh saplings last year and therefore they had less land for plantation this year. He said that a month and half ago, they had installed 782 tubewells out of which 70 per cent were in working condition. However, keeping in mind this campaign they had got all tubewells restored. He also said that 67 parks located in JJ clusters were also being restored as part of the campaign.
