NEW DELHI, May 19: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is launching a month-long intensive sanitation-cum-cleanliness drive from June 2.

Announcing this, Delhi Mayor Yog Dhyan Ahuja has appealed to residents, NGOs, Resident Welfare Associations and traders associations to cooperate with the MCD in making Delhi clean and pollution free. He said that the drive was being undertaken to curb the outbreak of any infectious diseases like gastro-enteritis, cholera and typhoid during the summer, he said

.As part of the drive, 40,000 workers will lift 5,500 metric tonnes of garbage from the city. More than 2,000 officials have been instructed to supervise the operation and 110 trucks have been bought for this purpose.

The exercise will be carried out jointly by the health, sanitation, horticulture and engineering departments and the Delhi Jal Board. Giving details about the drive, he said that garbage from all over the city will be collected and disposed. For mechanical treatment of garbage, a compost plant with a capacity of 500 MT per day is being set up at Bhalaswa, said the Mayor. All the dalaos (dumping grounds) and garbage bins will be cleaned and disinfected. All sewer lines will be cleaned and desilted the same day. All the public conveniences will be regularly cleaned, washed and disinfected.Special measures would be taken for cleanliness in resettlement colonies and slum clusters where adequate civic facilities are not available.

The MCD is working on an action plan for prevention of water-borne and vector or mosquito-borne diseases, which will be vigorously implemented, he said.

Ahuja said that all road signs, lane marks as well as zebra crossings will be repaired, washed and painted. All roadside railings, footpaths and by-lanes will be repaired, he said, adding that all public street light points will be repaired.

The mayor said that the sale of cut fruit and sugarcane juice from unlicensed vendors has already been banned and food hygeine raids will be further intensified. All shopkeepers selling food items have been instructed to keep dustbins outside their shops. To avoid littering in important public places like markets, parks, institutions and office complexes, 600 dustbins have been installed and one thousand more are being purchased.
