Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati issued an official statement on the US strike on Iraq. Here is the translation of the full text, issued by the state government’s Information and Public Relations Department:

UP Chief Minister Mayawati has condemned in strong words the intention behind the attack on Iraq by US President George Bush. When journalists sought her reaction, she said in an official statement that the US wants to impose itself as the world’s policeman which is sarasar asahniya (entirely intolerable) .

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister has urged the global community and all world leaders to exert pressure on the US, adamant on imposing war on Iraq, and stop it from shoving mankind into the fires of a great battle.

Criticising in strong words the US and British stand on the Iraq issue, she said they were against all international laws, established norms and traditions. She said the lone way to solve international disputes is through the aegis of the United Nations. The UN Security Council has considered the issue in depth and despite pressure from the US, the UN has not given them permission to attack Iraq. In such a situation, the US and British decision to launch a unilateral attack on Iraq shows their manmanepan (whimsical nature) and is extremely dangerous for the international community.

Mayawati said that this American step was being criticised everywhere and countries like China, Russia, France, Germany etc have opposed it openly. Majority of the citizens of US and UK are also against this. She also said that every peace-loving citizen of the world should raise his voice against the tanashahi (dictatorial tendencies) of the US.

She said when the majority of the world community is in favour of giving more time to Iraq and wants to save the citizens of Iraq from the misery of war, the US act of imposing war on the innocent people of Iraq is highly condemnable. She said that the US, which is today adamant on war with the dictatorship of Saddam Hussein, had supported all dictators during the Cold War era. Given this, the US has no legal or moral right to become a thekedar (contractor) of the entire world’s interest and impose an unilateral war. The US will have to shoulder the complete responsibility for this war which will put to great difficulty the people of Iraq.

Mayawati said that in today’s time the impact of a war is not limited to a region but is felt by the entire world in one way or the other. US President George Bush will be responsible for the difficulty the world will have to face because of US dadagiri (muscle-flexing).
